The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer who crafted many legendary styles worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.

He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, including the light-hued ensembles that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."

This news arrives shortly after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he began designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.

He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to blend menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting form-fitting garments made him a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he started creating ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as a number of outfits for her American tour after assuming the title.

Following a profession lasting half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Theatrical Flair: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The fashion world mourns the loss to a authentic original whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains indelibly etched.
