Israeli citizens observe second anniversary of October 7th incident as Gaza peace talks proceed
Israelis have gathered across the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations continued in Egypt over a resolution to the conflict in Gaza.
The attack led to more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely deadliest day for Jewish people since the World War II.
Israel answered by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, as reported by the area's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as reliable by the UN and other international bodies.
"Our aggressive enemies have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," the prime minister added on Tuesday.
He also promised to "realize all the objectives of the war: the return of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer create a risk to Israel".
Memorial Events Across Israel
The government authorities postponed formal remembrance events until 16 October - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still occurred across the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas attack was conducted in Tel Aviv. Put together by the affected families, it was televised throughout Israeli television channels.
Hours earlier, a minute's silence was held across the country.
Ceasefire Talks in Egypt
Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas delegations gathered in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of indirect talks to review the provisions of the proposal.
A high-ranking Palestinian official knowledgeable about the discussions said that an late session of negotiations began at evening in Egypt.
The representative stated the earlier meeting ended without concrete outcomes, amid disagreements over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not restart combat after the opening period of the agreement.
He added that the discussions are "tough and have yet to produce any significant progress," but pointed out that mediators are striving to close the disparities between the conflicting groups.
Critical Issues in Discussions
- A lasting ceasefire
- The exchange of the captives still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The pullout of troops from Gaza
- Measures for relief supplies deliveries
- After-conflict administration of the area
Citizen Sentiment
In Tel Aviv's public square previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling endured the incident on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were murdered and numerous more were captured by Hamas gunmen - shared: "No place feels like home any longer and until every captive come back no one will be secure."
"Once we see everybody home returned, we can breathe again. Then we can start to rebuild," she added.
Outside the leader's official dwelling in the capital, people congregated to express their solidarity for the loved ones of the captives. Israel reports nearly fifty stay in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be surviving.
Demonstrator one woman stated: "We need do every compromise required for the captives to come back home. But we really want guarantees that we will be secure."
Research now consistently show that approximately the majority of Israeli citizens desire the war to finish in exchange for the release of the hostages.
Palestinian Circumstances
At the location of the gathering, those paying respects came together to remember the victims.
From the site, the sound of military attacks and shelling could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers said the severe Israeli attacks carried on.
In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were noted in the early hours of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, Rimal and zone districts and in the eastern neighbourhood of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.
"As the night falls, the fear comes with it," relocated urban resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike last year, explained.
"Me and my three children are afraid of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are lying together, embracing, particularly my little child who places his face on me the entire evening."
"Constantly we look at the reports to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be completed and that the war will resume to us."
Health Emergency
Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area reported it had received the corpses of several people by the afternoon, including a trio killed in an Israeli attack in the south part district.
Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of the city reported additional victims had been transported. One of them was killed by Israeli troops while looking for help to the south region, health workers reported.
