Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during a recent discussion.
“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he has been listed as critical but stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”
New York police released security footage earlier this week of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt according to reports.
The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday morning in the area between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife just had a baby.
“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.
Boyd came to New York as a free agent in March and was expected to be an important component of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on 2 August and was carted from the field.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in last year and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
