Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
