Outrage Erupts as Former President Trump's Comments on Rob Reiner Ignites Sharp Criticism
Figures from both sides of the political spectrum and the entertainment industry are uniting to censure former President Donald Trump for his comments in the wake of the tragic passing of renowned director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Controversial Social Media Post
Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Los Angeles residence, Trump posted on social media to describe the late director as "anguished and struggling". In a message, he claimed Reiner's demise was "because of the anger he caused others through his massive, relentless, and incurable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".
Police Update and Arrest
Authorities have since announced the arrest of the Reiners' adult son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in relation to the incident. Reports indicate his bail was set at a substantial sum.
A Wave of Criticism from Celebrities and Politicians
The response to Trump's words was immediate and scathing.
This is a disgusting and despicable comment,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, similarly condemned the remarks. Goldberg referenced previous rhetoric from Trump about the killing of an activist, demanding, "Have you no shame? Is it possible to get any lower?"
California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply stated, "This is a sick man."
Echoing this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "He is a contemptible piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now implying the Reiners caused their own demise because they opposed him. So sick."
Criticism from Within Political Ranks
Some Republican elected officials also expressed dismay.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". She also mentioned challenges with substance abuse and psychological well-being some families face.
Fellow GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disrespectful" given the circumstances. He openly challenged others in his party to defend the statements.
The Director's Legacy and Views on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. During a past interview, he stated Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the presidency. He had also warned about the dangers of autocracy should Trump return to power.
"We see authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner said. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a risk that democratic systems collapse around the world."
Despite his pointed opposition, Reiner had previously expressed "complete revulsion" and condemned violence for political ends without reservation following the shooting of another individual.
An Ironic Connection: The Art of the Deal
Adding a layer of past irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who shot the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously shared the anecdote of the session, noting Trump's demand for "special hairspray" while posing on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
