The Red Devils Set to Secure Germany Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side

The forward, with six months remaining on her contract, is known as a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee coup for the WSL team.

Departure from Bayern has been anticipated after she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the club's supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

Reports in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top strikers. According to reports, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.

Consistent Goalscoring to Boost the Forward Line

The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a major uplift to the team's forward line. She has been highly consistent in front of goal in the Bundesliga.

  • For seven straight seasons, up to and including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Gathering Momentum at Carrington

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club appear to be gathering positive momentum.

Recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen further activity:

  1. The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.

Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”

Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
