The distinctive yellow-fronted apartment block visible behind helped us verify the footage.
Our team is analyzing images and video posted this morning that show the aftermath of a reported car bomb blast that Russian officials state killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he succumbed of his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to verify the location from which the pictures were from was based on posts saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the unique yellow hue of a nearby apartment building seen in the video.
Identifying other buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified the exact location the pictures were captured.
We also checked that the videos were recent and that the images had not been digital alteration.
