Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the right to contest particular calls made by the official, echoing the protocol already in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step follows just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
