During an first day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” New York City, declaring “a different age” and an ambitious beginning to his term.

A Historic Figure

The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this seldom arrives and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

The inauguration was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

A Sweeping Platform

Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Universal childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these services may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Headwinds

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly cordial.

The Fundamental Tests of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering basic services: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, repairing potholes, and making sure reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
